What is Shared Hosting?

Shared web hosting is a server that is used for multiple clients, a machine hosting multiple domains. Its main advantages:
  • It is cheaper because a machine is shared among many clients
  • Our supplier is responsible for the administration of the machine. We just have to upload the files to the server and perhaps properly configure the applications we use
Main problems
  • Limitations on use because we can not connect as administrators
  • More safety hazards to a dedicated server due to sharing the machine. At this point it is essential that we hire provider in the service is really professional, as there are ways to insulate customers share a server, but not all providers use them
  • Limitations of performance and usability of hardware resources. Our web site has to consume a small fraction of the hardware resource (disk, RAM, CPU) or otherwise our vendor we will "suggest" that we move to a dedicated hosting.
When choosing the most suitable for shared hosting web project we have to take into account the following elements:
  • Server Operating System
  • Resources: disk space, data transfer, email accounts and FTP accounts
  • Standard applications included: submission of forms, forums, chat, stats, charts, etc.
  • Programming systems available for your own applications: CGI, ASP, PHP, Perl, Java Applets, JSP, etc.
  • Available Databases: Access, MySQL, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, etc.
